The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Tongji University International Student Group (ASCE-Tongji-ISG) was awarded the Letter of Honorable Mention by the American Society of Civil Engineers for their outstanding contributions in the year 2022! This honor recognizes the meticulous organizational efforts and effective innovative achievements of ASCE-Tongji-ISG members, as well as the deep guidance and involvement of faculty advisors and industry mentors, and the strong support from the college and university.
ASCE, the American Society of Civil Engineers, is the full name of the organization. ASCE-Tongji-ISG, the Tongji University student chapter of ASCE, has nearly 50 members. The faculty advisors are Professor Hai-Bei Xiong, Professor Lie Luo, and Mr. Shuiming Shen. The group also receives guidance from Professor Chao Li, the ASCE Greater China Region Chair, and Mr. Hailong Liu, the Vice President of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) in Hong Kong.
In the year 2022, ASCE-Tongji-ISG assisted the school in hosting the National High School Structural Competition and the Freshman Structural Competition. They also participated in organizing the ASCE Pacific Southwest Conference, the All-American Civil Engineering Competition. Moreover, they invited numerous scholars and designers to the school for special lectures. In the National High School Structural Design Competition of 2022, over 70 top high schools from around the country participated. The competition lasted for three days and adopted a combined online and offline competition mode for the first time, achieving tremendous success. ASCE-Tongji-ISG was responsible for producing the conference handbook and coordinating the on-site loading process.
For the Structural Competition for freshmen in the Civil Engineering School in 2022, nearly 500 students registered, and a total of 117 teams participated in model making and loading. ASCE-Tongji-ISG members worked together to complete all processes, including pre-competition promotion, problem formulation, model guidance lectures, loading supervision, scoring, and award presentation.
Regarding the preparation for the 2022 ASCE National Competition, the Light Boat Team was innovative. They narrowed the stern in boat design and optimized straight-line speed performance. They also optimized the weight of aggregates in the materials. For the first time, they used a high-precision internal perforation plan in the construction process. Additionally, they used coloring agents for detailed optimization in appearance beautification.
