On June 16, 2026, U.S. News & World Report published its 2026–2027 Best Global Universities by Subject rankings. The Civil Engineering discipline of Tongji University was ranked No.1 worldwide with a subject score of 100.0, marking its sixth consecutive year at the top.

Among the 51 subject fields assessed, institutions from mainland China lead in 23 subjects. As one of those top-ranked disciplines, Tongji Civil Engineering has long been regarded as the flagship of China’s civil engineering academic tradition. With roots dating back to 1914, Tongji Civil Engineering is recognized as a national key first-level discipline, and its four subfields, namely Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, are all designated as national key second-level disciplines, making it the only civil engineering discipline in China with this distinction. The discipline also maintains a strong presence across QS, ARWU (Shanghai Ranking), and THE.
