Prof. Fengshou ZHANG, a distinguished professor in the College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University, was named one of the 50 winners of the 2025 Xplorer Prize. He received this award for his pioneering research in transportation and architecture.

Prof. Zhang has long been engaged in research on the development and utilization of deep underground space and carbon sequestration. He has successfully simulated the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) coupled fracture networks in fractured rock masses under complex geological conditions, elucidating the transport characteristics of materials within fractured rock and their governing conditions. He established theories on the stability and safety control of deep underground faults, yielding significant economic and social benefits. His future work aligns with China’s national “Dual Carbon” strategy, aiming to explore in-situ mineral carbonation and storage of CO₂ in coastal megacity clusters.

To date, in addition to an impressive publication record—more than 200 high-impact papers and four monographs—Prof. Zhang also holds 16 authorized invention patents. His significant contributions have earned him prestigious accolades, including the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards (as the lead contributor), the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award, and the inaugural Qian Qihu Award from the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering.

Established in 2018, the Xplorer Prize is a scientist-led nonprofit award dedicated to supporting young researchers in foundational sciences and cutting-edge technologies.
